Do You Have Portfolio Analysis Skills? – Part 1

Project Portfolio Analysis is so sample for a trained person. So for some of us, it will be very easy to understand the charts and tables very fast and for some, it might be new skill to gain.

So please for the trained ones, give some insights to what the charts and table data are telling us.

In a fast track and busy time for management, they would like to have a tool to tell them a lot by one click and glance. I use Primavera P6 EPPM as main analysis tool for projects, resources, cost and many other criteria to analyze the portfolio performance.

Here is a scenario of a small consultant who has permanent employees of 17 core professionals and from 10 to about 60 new employees depends on their loads. His projects are studies, design and construction supervision. However, the scenario is for the construction supervision only. Design team portfolio analysis is available in another article in the web site.

Currently they have 28 employees for site supervision. It is end of third quarter report which is used for the initial project performance and financial reporting for the 2017 financial year. It will be used also for 2018 company strategy, project planning, budgeting and recruitment.

From one picture like above, let us think and see what can we understand from it?

Let me ask few questions out of many to be answered. Some questions to be answered might needs to get down for more details. Some might be needing to link to other information not available here (like future projects in the pipeline). However, most questions can be answered from the picture above.

How was the company financial performance so far for 2017?

How is the project delivery Status? Are they ahead or late?

What’s about the recruitment planning? What we can understand from the company report?

What are the challenges for the company and how can they overcome the challenges?

What are the risks they have?

What goals they should add for 2018?

And many more… you can add whatever data analysis you understand from the picture?

Let’s see your capability on portfolio analysis.

Best luck for all…
