The Importance of Mapping the Right Project Delivery Process within the Enterprise Integrated System
Integrating Business Strategy with Project Delivery for Sustainable Growth
The core foundation for enterprise growth and profit.
The Challenge of True Integration
Integrating business strategy within the project delivery process, and vice versa, is the core foundation for sustainable enterprise growth and profit. However, it is not as simple as it sounds.
It remains a significant challenge for many organizations to achieve such integration. The first hurdle is establishing *one* unified project delivery process, from creation to closeout, that accommodates the different business lines within the organization. The level of detail within these processes is what distinguishes an organization as successful in efficient delivery, effective management, sustainable profit, and overall growth.
Going back to basics, what is the ultimate purpose of an integrated enterprise system? Before reading further, take a moment to consider one or two purposes. While there are many answers, the ultimate goal, in my view, is to provide *decision-making credibility* for the decision-makers. This credibility is what makes the process effective and efficient, reducing the need for time, energy, and money-consuming regular meetings and reviews.
Translating Effectiveness into Visible Results
This effectiveness and efficiency should be clearly demonstrated by the system. A simple dashboard might start with a positive cash flow chart, easily viewable at any point in time across different levels: project, portfolio, department, business line, region, and clients.
The challenge of achieving visible results always stems from the definition of the project delivery process, which is essential for building the right integrated system. Top management might wonder why they need to be involved in such details. The simple answer is to foster awareness among your employees about how the organization conducts its business. If the process is clear to top management, it will be easier for employees to implement and adopt. If top management is involved in understanding how it works, they will provide the right delegation and responsibility matrix. This is why the most successful managers are often those who have worked across different departments and business line levels.
This awareness is not only required for top management and internal staff; it is also crucial to demonstrate to your clients. It helps convince them of your organization’s maturity, its ability to deliver successful complex projects, and its capacity to expand and grow to take on mega projects.
The Path to Credible Decision-Making
Therefore, when you have a well-defined project delivery process (which is a significant topic for another discussion), you will have taken the first crucial step towards creating a credible enterprise integrated system for every decision made within the organization.
Best wishes for all
